BMW 5 Series
One of the best executive saloons, with top-notch quality, fantastic refinement, strong engines, masses of space and outstanding handling and steering. Well equipped too, and cleaner and more frugal than rivals.
The ride is firm, especially on M Sport models. The interior design is stark and not everyone gets on with BMW’s iDrive system, which is fitted as standard.
Offering exceptional refinement, and acceleration is more vivid as you climb up the range – the V8-engined 550i is nearly as quick as the high-performance M5.
The 5 Series uses simple rotary dials to work the stereo and ventilation systems. They can also be worked through the iDrive controller using a dial linked to a dash-mounted display. It is easier to work than the version fitted to the 7 Series, but still less than intuitive. The driving position is excellent thanks to a multi-adjustable seat and steering wheel.
